NS Environment Canada Weather Station Map

This map was produced for the NSCC Environment and Agriculture Technology Lab using ArcGIS v10.6. The purpose of this map is to display the distribution and accuracy of Nova Scotia Environment Canada weather stations with at least 15 years (considered enough time to determine climate tends) of data, beginning after 1950.

The data was acquired via the Environment Canada historical database, which is publicly available on the Government of Canada website. Users can filter, search and download CSV data for each station by station name/province.

The map was labeled to display the number of years the station was recording, and symbolized to display the accuracy (%) of the records. The accuracy was derived based on the number of daily records in relation to the number of days the station was recording. For example, while the station may have a record spanning 20 years, it's possible that there were daily and/or monthly gaps in the data. Sable Island, pictured on the map has 126 years of data recorded with an accuracy greater than 95%. This is due to the high number of consecutive daily records at that station, as the geographic location of the station is obviously important. Caribou Point on the other hand, has 90-92.5% accuracy, with 23 years of data recorded, so it is not as accurate as Sable Island.

This map is just a quick way to display the distribution and accuracy of Nova Scotia weather data for the time period of interest. It is a useful map to supplement environmental and agricultural research and analyses.
