Middleton NS Community Schools Map
This map was produced for the NSCC Applied Geomatics Research Group using ArcGIS v10.4. The purpose of this map is to display the geographic locations of 27 feeder schools from rural communities that consolidated to become the Middleton Regional High School, which opened in 1949.

This community based mapping project was produced in partnership with Al Peppard, former principal of Middleton Regional High School. Peppard compiled pictures and information on the 27 feeder schools, which was used to help pinpoint their locations. A blank point shapefile was created using ArcGIS to store the spatial location of the schools, as well as assign them a unique ID. (Numbered 1-27 for the total number of schools). Google Earth/Maps was also used to validate the locations. Topographic map data for this map was downloaded from the Nova Scotia Topographic Database (NSTDB) and symbolized accordingly.

The map was given to the Middleton Regional High School and is currently on display in the library, along with photographs of the schools. They are labelled with an index number (1-27) to match the numbers displayed on the map. Map users are able to interpret the map and photographs to identify the former schools, and gain an appreciation of some of the history around community schools in the Annapolis Valley.
